Johannesburg X KLM Trip Part 2

After the activities of the morning in my first post, we headed back to our hotel and decided to make good use of the infinity pool. It was not warm, even though the sun was out, it was still winter in the Southern hemisphere. We met plenty of cool people here, especially people in town for the South African Fashion Week. I can’t think of a better way to network than lounging by the pool in one of the world’s most fascinating cities! It was nice to get a little relaxation in, too, before the events of the evening.
That night, we finally got to attend the first night of South African Fashion Week! The difference between London Fashion Week and South African Fashion Week was surprising to me. Of course, I mean this in the best way possible. I have the immense appreciation for cultures all over the world, and I love any opportunity to see the best of what a place has to offer. There is not one single right way to do anything, especially fashion.
After all, creativity and style is the root of fashion, and there is no lack of either in South Africa. I enjoyed discovering the differences between South Africa’s social expectations, event structure, and especially fashions. One thing I really liked was the “African time,” which basically means that everything is a whole lot more relaxed than what I’m used to. Another thing that caught my attention in a big way was the incredibly vibrant style of the African designers.
Everything was very colourful and intensely African, with bold hues and large shapes! Walking through fabric markets on the continent is fascinating, but seeing that sort of bold brightness mixed with fashion-forward innovativeness was even more stunning.
After the South African Fashion Week event, it was time to enjoy another meal out. We went to Bryanston for a chance to taste Wombles Steakhouse, which was an excellent decision.
It’s a local favourite and also a great place for tourists to eat. We dined on delicious steaks and sipped on top-notch wine. As we relaxed, we chatted about the day’s events and planned what tomorrow would hold.
