Japan: Cities and Landscapes

Japan is one of the most striking countries in the world. From the high-tech skyscrapers of Tokyo to the quiet woodlands where forest bathing draws tourists and locals alike, Japan is a country of magnificent opposites.

The culture in Japan is well-known as incredibly polite and work-oriented. The country is one of the most advanced in the world and in many ways, a visit to Japan is like visiting the future. And yet, while the cities are undoubtedly exciting, the distinct passion for nature here is also worth your time. You’ll need to plan your trip carefully to fit everything in!

Tokyo

Tokyo is a full-on kind of city but it’s not like anywhere else. Here order and politeness are paramount so you’ll find walking around feels much calmer and safer than other large cities. Hiroo is a particularly lovely area which is a little quieter and more sophisticated without losing the excitement Tokyo has to offer. The main shopping street lends a village feel to the area that is in contrast to the expected high-rises and crowds.

But, if you are looking to jazz up your Instagram feed, you must go to Harajuku, an area that has almost dedicated itself to looking amazing on photos. This area is neon-bright, busy and exceptionally creative with every shop front boasting something totally different. From icecreams dressed up as cute animals to having a coffee with a hedgehog, you can do it all here

While you are in the city, it’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with some of the language being spoken. Japanese is a beautiful language that has, more recently, begun to take words from English roots, usually via technology. Even if you only learn a few key phrases, speaking a local language is always a good way to start navigating the city for yourself and begin to understand the culture. Have a look at shin kanzen master books to get started.

Yakushima National Park

While the city is bursting with life and light and color, the Japanese also have a deep appreciation for the landscape they have. This is why, unlike so many other countries, their forests remain largely intact and are well respected by the people.

The concept of forest bathing has been around since the 1980s when it became clear that a technologically advanced society still needed a connection with nature to avoid depression, anxiety and aches and pains associated with urban life. There are centres that specialize in forest bathing all around the country but Yakushima National Park is a gorgeous area to explore no matter how into forest bathing you are!

Yakushima National Park is an island made up of 39 mountains and includes beaches, forests and waterfalls in its landscape. In contrast to the urban sprawl of Tokyo, the small villages are made up of people who follow a more traditional lifestyle, that respects the earth and nature around.

The more you see and experience of Japan, the more complex and intriguing the culture becomes. From the city to the forest, Japan is culturally rich and diverse; just what you want to experience on holiday.
