Sussex: The Place For Fans Of Racing
There is nothing as thrilling for the racing enthusiast as an abundance of all year round racing events. Fortunately, for Sussex fans, there are plenty of these. You just need to know how and where to find them.
Goodwood Festival of Speed
This is the most famous racing event in West Sussex and the whole of South England. The Goodwood Festival of Speed is held in early June or late July and has been in existence since 1993 when it was founded by Lord March. The Goodwood is quite frankly as thrilling as it is attractive. It features ancient cars, aeroplanes, drift cars, and motorbikes. One of the most popular attractions is the real-life replicas of the famous Wacky Race cars. The Goodwood circuit, at Chester, is a rather short one, at 2.5 miles in length.
However, it has a few fast bends, short strains and turns that are bound to give any driver a headache. Fortunately, the drivers here are relatively well-experienced, with the likes of Nick Heidfeld and Dan Collins taking the wheel almost every year. It is a very celebrated event, and as such, if you wish to attend, you should book tickets very early in advance. But this is the mother of all motor shows; it goes without saying that missing it is inexcusable.
Brighton Speed Trails
There are a number of other motorsport events held annually, but none of these areas large in attendance and as celebrated as the Goodwood Festival of Speed. For instance, there is the Brighton Speed Trails, organized by the Brighton and Hove Motor Club annually. The Brighton Speed Trials is one of the oldest racing events in Sussex, having to be in existence for over 100 years.
The first Brighton Speed race was first held in the year 1905 and owes its existence to Sir Harry Preston. It is a one-day event in a circuit in Brighton that is barely over a quarter miles. The Brighton Speed Trails also features motorbike racing. The BST has a long hall of fame, with legendary motor racing drivers such as Prince Bira, Raymond Mays and R. O. Shuttleworth. This rally is held in the second week of September.
Regis Rally
Also noteworthy is the Regis Rally. The track is much longer than the Brighton Speed Trials, as the route is about 140 miles. The Regis rally is held in West Sussex. Also a one-day event, the Regis track runs through much of rural West Sussex and Hampshire.
It should be noted that there are lots of other racing events held annually in Sussex. Sussex has a good number of motorsport clubs such as the Central Sussex Motor Club and the Dyson Motorsport, and the Horsham Riders Club. The Bognor Regis Motor club also has a motor rally event every year in West Sussex
There are a number of cars shows held in the larger Sussex. The Brighton Mini Club, for example, will be holding a charity car show in summer, this year. This annual event held at Shorean-by-sea will feature very classic cars. Proceeds from the race will go to the Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice. Another such event is the Auto Historica, held by the Burpham Motor Racing Club. This is a classic car and bike show held in Arundel.
Go Karting in Sussex
Sussex also has an abundance of go-karting tracks, with a significant number of go-karting events held annually. One such event is the Crawley International Karting, an 800-metre go-karting race held at Go Karting Crawley. They also have the Crawley Grand Prix open every Friday. The track is 375 metres and the Prix can have as many as 12 drivers.
