Three big names, three very different fashion lives - that's what I discovered this afternoon as Vogue fashion director Lucinda Chambers took to the Vogue Festival stage with Tory Burch, Angela Missoni and Manolo Blahnik to talk about their respective career paths.

I knew I wanted a career, I worked out of my apartment for the first two and a half years," recalled Burch, pointing out that growing up she was in fact something of a tomboy and fashion didn't really interest her. "My prom dress was my first dress and that was a big deal at the time," she said. But it was filling a gap in her own wardrobe that led her to launch her label, something which has since seen her become the second youngest female self-made millionaire in the world. "I laugh when I remember saying that I wanted to build a global lifestyle brand and I had no idea what that meant or what it would take," she said. The answer? A lot of cold-calling and being honest with potential investors. "I said: be prepared to lose it [your money]." It turns out that neither they nor she had to worry. But she's quick to point out that it's not just down to her: "I'm the CEO and the designer but I'd never be able to do it without my team.

For Angela Missoni, meanwhile, the idea of a team came inbuilt, being party of the famous Missoni family.

Manolo Blahnik - Vogue Festival

For Blahnik, however, the idea of a team is something of a foreign concept.

Something that he clearly learned through his forays into making rubber shoes for Ossie Clark back in the Seventies (which he confessed weren't so successful) as well as silver foil shoes for lizards when he was young.
